When you try to debug a crash with the help of a debugger, a dozen stack traces and code analysis tools, but just can't find the bug...

...and then start applying logic & common sense and discover the cause within 10 minutes.

I'm afraid I can only credit hear-say and people from the inside. They blogged about moving their chat infrastructure towards a service platform a couple of days ago, tho.

If you don't mind self-hosting, I'd recommend thelounge. It has a light web interface, which also runs well on mobiles, gives you a persistent chat history and support for link previews and media uploads.

How come people expect everything they run on their mobiles to come as an "app", but then refuse to access anything but a website on their computers?

Personally I prefer "real" apps on all my platforms, but I get it:

Installing computer programs is perceived as more complicated than tapping Install in the app store. This needs to be addressed though.

Linux would have all the right tools here: package management & sandboxing. It's a shame it still lacks the traction it would so deserve.

Kept thinking about this some more and came to the conclusion I really disagree with this being either gaslighting or ableism.

You really don't require any more abilities to log on to IRC than you do to use a browser or a mail client. It's something we expect from people nowadays and can be learned in 5 minutes.

What is ableism is excluding people from your community by switching to a platform they can't use. Ask the blind people in this thread what they think of Discord.

I didn't mean it's something for you to install (even though I can only recommend it), but it's a service for Mozilla to host for their users, just like they host their other infrastructure themselves.

And I'd expect Mozilla to do better and provide those tools and solutions instead of just giving up and handing it over to an external service/platform.

That's my entire point though: they're now migrating everyone to a different platform and somehow expect that to magically fix their culture and people problems.

I see that as a platform that Mozilla should host for their users, just like they host their other infrastructure themselves. The users of that platform don't have to install or host anything, of course.

No, that's the entire point! If you have different needs, an open protocol means you will be able to find a client that's working better for you!

See this very thread where a blind person responded.

Last toot on the entire IRC v platform discussion I kicked off here:

If you believe IRC is problematic because it has issues with a messy nick registration process, you don't get persistent chat history and you can't post images/videos/media into a channel...

please uninstall xchat and maybe give a different client or self-hosted solution like thelounge a chance. You perception of IRC's experience is rather limited because of the client you chose, not because IRC sucks.
