    If we do want to talk about "historical amnesia" and "collective historic moral failure", let us be fair and consider the failings of our own society as well. We should not forget the thousands of years of systematic dehumanization, slavery and atrocities that the upper castes inflicted and continue to inflict on Dalits.

    I can't object to the British people knowing and really understanding their colonial history. Nothing wrong with a people knowing their history. It can only be a good thing.

    But, I worry that by focusing on morality and making it personal, we miss the elephant in the room -- namely capitalism that oppresses people all over the world regardless of race or nationality. I worry that by encouraging an exaggerated sense of patriotism, we play right into the hands of the ruling elite (think corrupt mainstream politicians and big corporations in India) who would love to divide and rule us. Much better, in my opinion, to establish common ground between working class all over the world, so that we can fight the real oppressors who are the ruling classes.

    The systemic problems that caused colonialism still exist around us. It is not a matter we can simply seek an apology about and put behind us.

    I am running !parabola on the #Intel #NUC (NUC5PPYH) for my !selfhosting !server. Occasionaly, the #LAN gets disconnected, and since the machine is headless, I have to hard reboot the machine. This happens regardless of whether the LAN is connected through #ethernet or through #USB. Similarly, while booting up, sometimes the LAN fails to connect, and I have to repeatedly hard reboot until the LAN connects. I wonder if there is some bug in the LAN driver for the NUC hardware.

    Thankfully though, this problem is not so frequent that it is a major concern. Also, since the server lives with me in my bedroom rather in some remote location, it is easily accessible for quick repairs. Despite the difficulties, selfhosting is still so empowering and fun. I can't imagine living my digital life in a corporate controlled silo. If I was forced to do that for some reason, I'd feel like having been thrown in prison.

    I think conversations on !gnusocial would improve significantly if federated thread resolution (If someone you follow replies to a user unknown to the server, the server fetches the full thread so you can view it without leaving the UI) is implemented and enabled by default. Right now, you end up hearing only a part of the conversation, and that can impede taking part in the discussion.

    Also, federation on the !fediverse can be better. We would be able to have better discussions if we could somehow unify Diaspora, Hubzilla, GNU Social, etc. and thus have access to more people. Right now, there is much fragmentation. I have people I know on Diaspora, but considering I have GNU Social, I am not feeling very motivated to set up and maintain yet another social networking account.
