What's in your $PS1? Lately I've been adding $? (exit status) to it and I can't believe I've lived without this for so long. Turns out there's plenty of times when something seems to exit cleanly but in reality $? isn't zero. It also turns out that this is usually just fine. But not always, such as with wine.

So, do ya'll have any must-haves in your $PS1? Obviously I'm not asking about the default username:host/path# that most PS1's are set to. That's all perfectly useful, I nestled $? between the user and the hostname, and have room for something numeric between the host and the path.

My full PS1 including colors is:

Linux would make a great OS if it came with a decent text editor.

I found out today that my credit rating had improved so much that I could get a higher service level with my checking account. Apparently all this really means is I can get a debit card with a doggy on it.

A very good friend of mine (not on Mastodon) hooked me up with a new mobo+cpu+ram for my workstation. According to the benchmarks, it is "130%" "faster". According to the butt-dyno, it's about 333% faster. I am for sure hugely constrained by disk I/O (shocking, I know), even before the upgrade, but now it's just ridiculous. My Factorio megafactory used to choke a bit on the old Phenom, but it plays at a full 60 UPS on the new setup. Factorio is memory speed/cache latency constrained, by design, so I consider it a decent real world load test; it is afterall about all I use this thing for other than shooting off invoices or SSH'ing to real computers). Not taking a 1/6th speed hit just because my RAM is too slow is awfully nice, this DDR4 is heckin' faster -- 3x or so, as best I can tell by the numbers.

So yeah. That was nice.

Instagram deleted. I pretty much just used it to share crap with the fishkeepers I know, but really we all just use the "Fishcord" Discord channel so I'm not losing much by deleting insta. Facebook is losing me so I count that as a win.

I'm not going to repost all of the crap from there, here, but there are a couple of fantastic shots that are worth it. The .zip export was only 21MB, and appears complete. For the shots I want to repost I'll grab the originals.

In other slightly related news, I have resurrected my old server, fixed the expired certs, and (once again) fixed its broken SQL server that had no fucking reason to be broken. I will be trying Hubzilla on it for content aggregation. If I go this route I will need to find better hosting, the random reboots are not appreciated and are apparently frequent enough to cause breakage.

I've also given more thought to keeping social media at all, and have decided that when used for its intended purpose (getting laid, hired, or fired) it's pretty much just a Kardashev Type 1 communication tool at our fingertips but otherwise harmless. It's when bad behavior is encouraged (even by a simple upvote, any attention at all; it doesn't matter) that it becomes a problem. Just say no to attention whores. Pic related.
