@codewiz There's some history behind that. In brief, it used to be UTC+7:30. During the Japanese occupation in World War II, it was UTC+9:00 (same as Japan). Then it went back to UTC+7:30 and then to UTC+8:00 when Peninsula Malaysia moved to the same TZ as Borneo Malaysia.

The first time the family visited the island years ago, there were still human residents. In another visit a few years later, most were gone. In a final act, the old visitor centre is to be demolished to free up more breeding space for the penguins.
