@freemo I'm the same way for the most part. The lack of integrity and the toxicity of what's considered newsworthy puts me off and makes it uninteresting. With tech, I've mostly developed my own opinion of the topics independently so the bias that's often present isn't a huge deal.

Amolith (amolith@masto.nixnet.xyz)'s status on Monday, 16-Sep-2019 14:31:11 UTC Amolith Just set #Nitter up 😏 Similar to (and inspired by) #Invidious, it's an alternative frontend to Twitter but without ads, tracking, or javascript. It doesn't use the official API so there are no rate limits plus you're never connecting directly to Twitter, and it's *much* more lightweight.

This means that, if people add my generated feed, I can recommend *any* article, whether the source is a direct RSS feed or something I've added from wallabag, and it will show up in their feed reader :thonking:

Amolith (amolith@masto.nixnet.xyz)'s status on Tuesday, 10-Sep-2019 20:21:16 UTC Amolith Alright I'm impressed with this. #wallabag can generate RSS feeds of your unread articles. I didn't think about this before now but that means I can throw wallabag a link using the browser extension while I'm working on something and it will be downloaded to wallabag then to #TinyTinyRSS and from there, it's downloaded to my phone. With hardly any effort (aside from setting them up), I can read any article offline in a single app.

Amolith (amolith@masto.nixnet.xyz)'s status on Sunday, 19-May-2019 14:16:27 UTC Amolith I'm looking for an open source alternative to #Evernote. I've tried #Joplin, #Simplenote, #Turtl, and a few others but none of them quite cut it. Does anyone have any suggestions?

We've got a few FLOSS options, some free but proprietary listings, and a bunch of paid games so there's something for everyone :blobwink:
If you don't see one you want to play, feel free to add it in alphabetical order and list yourself under it! :blobhappy:

https://undraw.co/illustrations
All the illustrations are free, you get SVGs, and you can even change the colour prior to download so they all have the colour scheme you want right ootb.
The license is even better. You can use them for free for both personal and commercial projects without attribution. I will likely give attribution anyway because it's just an awesome project but I do like the freedom they give.
I'm working on a talk for #SELF and this is the first slide:

Amolith (amolith@masto.nixnet.xyz)'s status on Sunday, 03-Mar-2019 03:46:14 UTC Amolith I've seen URI before on a few websites but just assume it was meant to be URL. Turns out I was very wrong and I've been using the wrong term for years 😂
https:// = scheme
github.com = host
/tootsuite/mastodon = pathhost = URI
path = URI or URN
host+path=URI
scheme+host+path=URI or URLSo if you're asking someone for how to get to their website, what you're really looking for is the URI; you don't want someone to spell out https;//joinmastodon.org, just joinmastodon.org. When you want a full link (like copy/pasted), it's more accurate to say URL but URI is still correct.
Just thought that was interesting ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

This is a very easy-to-use demo and proof-of-concept server to show how *incredibly* easy it is have your private information stolen through seemingly benign methods.
I've got an article mirrored on my blog explaining it a little more in-depth if you're interested.

Amolith (amolith@masto.nixnet.xyz)'s status on Friday, 25-Jan-2019 01:37:16 UTC Amolith Before I go ruining my instance, is there any way to give a user their username back? I assume I can do something with the database but I'm not 100% certain.
Friend made an account, I promoted them to admin expecting to have to option to demote them if needed but I found that I didn't. So I had them delete their account then remake it. Only to find that their username was taken.
Anyone know how to fix this so they can have the same username?
(please boost 🙏)
