Is it? Even Arch and Nix only wrap the binary package. So it looks like this is terrible to built for source - and this is not what I'd call "free" (as in speach). YMMV
Anyhow, I suggest giving Emacs (not just) a try :-)

Please consider free alternatives. With #emacs you get the same, but much more customizable, much more hackable and all free software.
I suggest giving #spacemacs or #emacsdoom a try and watch David Willson's great #systemcrafters videos to unlesh the power of Emacs.

#guix has a new recursive importer for #rust #crates, written by Martin Becze and improved by me. It now, when searching dependencies, prefers an existing package satisfying semver requirement over importing the highest version create. This saves adding a lot of new packages. As an example: When importing sequoia-openpgp@0.20.0 this only imports 19 crates now, compared to 96 using the former method.
Also package names are now trimmed to the first non-zero part - resulting in the semver.
