Bob Mottram (bob@social.freedombone.net)'s status on Monday, 08-Jan-2018 23:50:33 UTC Bob Mottram A note on the passing of Tony Baldwin. Before 2016 the fediverse was a small world of familiar faces, and Tony was one of those. Tony was characteristic of the pioneers of federated social networks in that he was multi-talented. In addition to hacking on miscellaneous social network stuff he was a father, runner, painter, photographer, multilingual translator and anarchist. Like a lot of us he was also a precariat, living on uncertain income in a hostile world and struggling with all of the usual things, and some not so usual ones.
One thing I should point out which he would probably find funny. I never much liked his Shakespearean insult bot. It was amusing at first, but the joke soon got irritating.
One of Tony's PHP scripts lives on in an adapted form in the Freedombone project. It's purpose is to clear out old posts so that the database size doesn't grow indefinitely. When you're running on small ARM boards without much storage, and want to keep the performance reasonable, this is quite a good thing to have. -

https://www.politico.eu/article/irans-telegram-revolution
The main things wrong with Telegram are:- Proprietary server, running who knows what
- All users critically depend on one server, run by some dude (also see Signal)
- Probably bad boutique crypto algorithm (remember the Snowden quote about boutique crypto being the easiest to break)
- Proprietary server, running who knows what

Keeping what we have now isn't really an option unless total economic and environmental collapse is the goal. -
Bob Mottram (bob@social.freedombone.net)'s status on Thursday, 28-Dec-2017 12:07:54 UTC Bob Mottram From The future will be technical:
If we want our community to grow sustainably, and for our future to be properly solarpunk, this is what I feel we should do:- Recognize the wound in us, caused by a highly technological world we no longer understand and are actively discouraged from understanding.
- Understand that most of our "non-dev" friends carry this wound, though they may not articulate it.
- Feed a culture where new people are encouraged to be collaborators, not consumers, no matter the background they are coming from.
- Choose to grow organically, using methods that are radically different from the modern web strategy of βgrow like a hockey stick then bounce off the tip!β. This likely means growing slowly, but intentionally.
- When building or writing for the verse, choose the path that empowers and enlightens, which may not be the slickest or simplest path.
- When the most empowering path requires technical skill, offer the resources for any scuttler to learn these skills. It is always better to articulate than obscure.
- Check the language of any of our technical docs, to make sure it is inviting and empowering, and not filled with the closed-off culture of the larger tech world. Be conscious that any readme can be an invitation to our incredible coded world.
- Keep being awesome.
- Recognize the wound in us, caused by a highly technological world we no longer understand and are actively discouraged from understanding.

Bob Mottram (bob@social.freedombone.net)'s status on Tuesday, 26-Dec-2017 22:35:58 UTC Bob Mottram @tether To blame everyone who volunteers to organize CCC for the bad behavior of one man is unjustified in my estimation. However, I do think it would be a good idea to have some acknowledgement during the conference of what happened in the Tor project and how they dealt with it. This might help other communities to do better and avoid mistakes.
A lot of it I think boils down to not having any one person have too much power or influence within a group. Maintain a balance of power. Avoid hero worship and cultism. Cultism always has bad outcomes. This also applies more generally in politics. -
