I wasn't posting much news about #Smithereen lately — fixing that!

The core functionality of photo albums is now done. You can create albums, upload photos, comment on them, and like them. It's all properly federated (between Smithereen servers only). There's a brand new photo viewing UI too. Two of them, actually, desktop and mobile.

Remaining features for 0.9 include:
- "System" albums — profile pictures and saved photos
- Tagging
- Profile picture update posts
- Groups feed

#Smithereen 0.8 is out! In this release:

- Reposts and quote-reposts
- Post embeds
- Remote interaction popup when you try to interact with a post without an account
- New profile fields (starting to feel like a social network now)
- Comment view setting: threaded (default), two-level, flat
- Hover cards for mentions
- Mention autocomplete
- Bookmarks for profiles and groups
- Lots of minor fixes and improvements

Another new feature in #Smithereen: bookmarks. Not like Mastodon ones, but you can now bookmark users and groups, and see all posts you've ever liked. VK had the same thing so why shouldn't I? Your people/groups bookmarks are private and never leave your server.

I'm adding new profile fields to #Smithereen, so I would like to ask the fediverse about what kinds of contact info one would expect to be able to add to their profile. So far I've seen:
- Personal website/blog
- Matrix
- XMPP
- Telegram
- Signal
- Phone number
- Twitter
- Email

I've not yet seen these in fediverse profiles but they are mainstream enough that won't hurt to add:
- Instagram
- Facebook
- VKontakte
- Snapchat
- Discord

Is there anything I missed?

So, #Smithereen no longer requires a username when signing up. You instead get assigned one automatically, of the form "idXXX" where XXX is the ID for your user record. You can change it later in settings if you wish. Current Mastodon versions handle this change no problem.

The username is only visible in two places:
- The URL of your profile
- When someone mentions you
So it's not very important. Definitely not important enough to be a required field when you register.

And now I think I'm done and I can say that these features are enough for the first beta release. Everyone is welcome to host their own #Smithereen 0.1 instance, try it out, and report any issues.

#Smithereen update, now that the heat has subsided and I'm capable of thinking again.

User actors now have `friends` and `groups` collections. These collections contain links to someone's friends and groups for easy synchronization in the future. Also, actors now send their followers Add and Remove activities for these collections when they add/remove friends and join/leave groups. This lays the foundation for an upcoming feature ;)

#Smithereen update: basic support for polls is in. You can vote and see results. They will be up to date if the remote server sends Update{Question}. And that's it. You can't create your own polls yet.

#Smithereen update: comments feed.

Not sure about Facebook, but VK has this and it's fairly useful. This is the place where you keep track of any comment threads you've participated in. Posts are sorted by last comment time.

New Instagram version has the #Smithereen logo as its report icon 🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔

#Smithereen update.

- Events! Yes, events! They're a subtype of group with additional fields — namely, start and end times. There's no field for location yet. There will be one at some point in the future.
- You can tentatively join an event. This is my first custom activity type (sm:TentativeJoin).
- There are reminders for events like for birthdays (you can see one on the screenshots).
- There's a calendar that shows your events and friends' birthdays.

#Smithereen 0.4.3 is out with grouped news feed entries ("John added 5 friends" instead of 5x "John added Jane as a friend") and some bug fixes.
