... telling the world I'm burned out and admitting that the project has suffered for it, is maybe not the smartest P.R. move.

But I think people deserve the truth, and it's not all bad news. And besides, the shame and stigma around mental health stuff needs to die, and admitting weakness is part of that.

Looking forward to giving a talk on Why Open Source? to a local business. One of the reasons will be:

"Because your developers say so, and if you don't do as they say they'll go work for someone else."

I'll sugar-coat it a bit. But this is a real reason many businesses support FOSS. It's worth calling it out, both as real talk, and to remind the devs in the audience they have power.

I think it's high time to learn systemd! The dust has settled, it's not going anywhere.

That entire talk demonstrates a good attitude and made me think the speaker is probably a nice person.

Paranoia aside, if that is becoming a standard feature, then one must assume all keys in clouds are potentially exposed; it's now in the hands of lawmakers.

The most paranoid already assumed that, of course, but if the bar has been lowered then more of us will need to factor this into our risk assessments.

Whether the author "meant it" or not is almost irrelevant. It proves the top brass at Facebook are well aware of how abusive their products are, they've debated and discussed, and decided to not right the wrongs.

It's malice, folks.

I mean, many of us assumed that already. But now we actually have it in black and white from a senior executive. That matters.

Prediction:

Software will be used to mitigate #meltdown and #spectre, slowing everything down.

In 2020, a new line of Intel CPUs hit the market where you pay a premium for "virtual security extensions" (VSE) that let you turn off the mitigations.

Google, AWS buy truckloads.

Dear fellow #Mastodon users. Please be patient with the people creating Mastodon and GNU Social.

Writing software takes time, and the teams working on these applications are very small.

Most of them are also wearing many hats. Some are students, others have full time non-Mastodon jobs. Some admin instances in addtion to writing code.

The Twitter kitchen probably has more people working in it than the entire #Fediverse. Please adjust your expectations accordingly! 😄

I really enjoyed presenting https://www.mailpile.is/ to the #redecentralize folks last night. It was completely unprepared and ad-hoc, but people seemed to like it.

It's always inspiring and encouraging to be face-to-face with people that care about your work and want you to succeed.

I'll be at the Redecentralize meetup in London this evening. Although not on the schedule, I suspect Mastodon and the #fediverse may be discussed a bit...

I submitted a very minor patch to https://github.com/cdent/py-ostatus last night, to allow py-ostatus to talk to current Mastodon and QVitter.

Neither I nor the maintainer have a lot of time, but it would be cool if other pyMastonauts would pile on and keep filling in the blanks...

Mailpile (https://github.com/mailpile/Mailpile) has 458 closed (3 open) pull requests, of which 334 were merged.

I think that's not too bad!

Although I do wonder what the numbers are like if I exclude PRs from the core team. Not sure how best to measure that.
