    Some updates on federation:

The code powering the demo in the previous toot has been merged in the develop branch and deployed on https://open.audio.

This means that any public track published on open.audio can be searched from Mastodon and played via a single click.

I'm still looking for a way to have Mastodon embed the track directly via its audio player, but I'm going to call it a day ;)

So, in case people are wondering if #Funkwhale can actually federate with other fedi software such as Mastodon, the answer is yes.

I've included a demo video below. Let me give you some context:

    - I'm using an account on mastodon.social (to show you that it works with a current release of Mastodon)
    - I'm using development version of Funkwhale runing on my local computer, hence the ngrok.io URL.

This is basic, but it's to show you we're no t lying when we're talking about federation with other fedi software.

Follows will work as well, I'll share a video as soon as it's ready.

    Worked on this today: https://code.eliotberriot.com/eliotberriot/audio-mirror

It's a small set of scripts to mirror youtube channels and #podcasts on your #Funkwhale pod.

In particular, the "sync-podcasts.py" script allows you to mirror one or more podcasts feeds.

Each podcast will get a dedicated library, podcast files will be uploaded on your pod, and you can even set up a cron job to automatically have new feed entries pushed to your pod!

This should work with any podcasts that has a RSS feed available

Bugs are still possible of course, but it worked rather well during my tests 🎉

We did a lot of progress to reduce the bus factor lately, but most of the code is still owned and maintained by me.

I think one way to improve that situation would be to have some reviewers before I merge my contributions, to distribute ownership of the codebase on other people.

If you have some interest in HTML/JS/Python/CSS/Design/Docs, and want to help, do you mind adding your name here so I can ping you when relevant?

    Hello Fedi!

The first iteration of the #retribute app is now officially ready 🎉

    https://app.retribute.me/

It's a web application that connect to your Mastodon account(s) and suggest you creators to tip based on your activity.

If you enjoy the concept or have some feedback, please let me know!

You can also find more about the app and how it works on the about page: https://app.retribute.me/about

It does work! So you can now reference albums and tracks from https://open.audio/library in Mastodon via their url and get an embedded player for free!

(it will land in Funkwhale 0.19, but it's already on the develop branch if you want to try it ;)

Okay, I'm actually quite happy with this and I'd like your opinion.

This first guide explains how to translate #Funkwhale using weblate, with small, easy steps and lots of screenshots.

I did my best to provide lot of context and to have an easy to follow structure.

You may have seen I've been working on per-user libraries for #funkwhale.

This is a really, really huge set of changes that impact a lot how the application will behave, both technically and functionally.

If you're remotely interested in Funkwhale, as a creator, user, instance owner..., please take some time to read this: https://code.eliotberriot.com/funkwhale/funkwhale/merge_requests/368

I tried to explain what is being done, why, and how it will affect your experience.

Let me know what you think about it.

This is a note to people moving their repositories blindly to Gitlab.org: do you know Google is actually a huge investor in Gitlab?

The issue is not about Microsoft buying Github. The issue is about centralization and silos.

You do not solve that by moving your data from one silo to another.

You solve that by relying on small providers you can trust, or by becoming a provider yourself.

It's been a while since my last post on the subject, but here are some exciting news about #funkwhale: the #federation is actually usable now, as shown in the video below:

    1. We follow another instance
    2. We scan it's library
    3. We import some tracks from it
    4. We play those tracks from our own instance

You can't imagine how happy I am to see this actually working, after weeks working on the protocol/invisible stuff!
