10 years ago I made the first commit¹ to Conversations.im
To 24 year old me working on one project for 10 years would have been unbelievable.
These days making commits at 2:00 in the morning is almost unbelievable 😂
Happy birthday Conversations! 🎂 🥳
(Someone should teach these kids how to write .gitignore files 😜)

To be clear: They didn’t just reject an update. They outright removed the app entirely. Otherwise my plan B would have been to remove the contacts permission which is used to display the name and profile picture locally if the XMPP address matches an entry in the users address book.
Google has just removed #Conversations_im from the Play Store because they think we are uploading the user’s contact list. We don’t.
Being able to do proper message replies (including jumping to the original message) was one of the primary reasons for starting the work on Conversations 3.0
I’m glad it’s working now.

I mentioned before that Conversations 3 will use Dynamic Colors (Material You). Here are two screenshots of how this will look in the chat screen.
Theming is a frequently requested feature for Conversations.
Conversations 3.0 will come with a green default theme and on recent devices users will be able to use "Material You".
There will be two settings:
· Theme: Light | Dark | Automatic (follow system)
· Use Dynamic Colors (Material You)
The latter will only be available on devices running Android 12+.
This means no color selection on earlier devices unfortunately; but time will take care of that problem for us.
Just in case you are spending the next couple of days with people who are not on #XMPP yet and have some time on your hands. 😊
Conversations is currently available for free on the Google PlayStore.

I’m excited to announce that NLnet, as part of the NGI Assure project, will fund the Conversations 3.0 development.
Conversations 3.0 is a massive refactor of the UI and database layer that will bring Conversations up to speed with modern Android development toolkits and pave the way for long awaited features such as emoji reactions and message references (quotes).
Thanks to NLnet for their ongoing effort to contribute to the #xmpp ecosystem.
The goal with Conversations 3.0 is to apply everything I learned developing https://Ltt.rs to Conversations.
