David Ho (davidho@mastodon.world)'s status on Monday, 12-Feb-2024 02:22:35 UTC David Ho Itâs not: if we donât decarbonize fast enough, weâll need more COâ removal (#CDR).
Itâs: If we donât decarbonize fast enough, weâre screwed.
CDR is useless unless we decarbonize drastically.
CDR is for residual emissions, not luxury removal.

David Ho (davidho@mastodon.world)'s status on Sunday, 24-Dec-2023 23:06:36 UTC David Ho I used the COâ removal (CDR) as time machine analogy to argue that while we need to research and develop CDR because itâs needed in the future, CDR is useless as a climate solution until we decarbonize drastically.

David Ho (davidho@mastodon.world)'s status on Friday, 08-Sep-2023 09:56:31 UTC David Ho It's hard for people to visualize removing tons or billions of tons of carbon dioxide (COâ). I propose we talk about COâ removal (#CDR) like a time machine (e.g., this machine will take us back 5 minutes). For example:
Q: How far back in time does planting 100 million trees take us?
A: If one mature tree takes up an average of 25 kg of COâ per year, then 100 million trees will take up 2.5 MtCOâ. That's a time machine that takes us back 33 minutes and 6 seconds in a year. It's not a lot.
