6 stations on 2 metres SSB for tonight's FSQ Fridays net. None of our radios quite agree on the frequency. :) !amateur https://gs.sdf.org/attachment/350112

This monument to the Battle of Stalingrad is pretty bloody impressive https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Motherland_Calls https://gs.sdf.org/attachment/328553

XEP-xxxx: Matrix Client-Server API over XMPP
https://static.uhoreg.ca/matrix/xep-matrix.html
"As everyone knows, HTTP is a terrible protocol to use as a transport for real-time communications. To remedy this, this specification defines a transport for the Matrix Client-Server API using a proven real-time communications protocol, namely XMPP."

Got mediagoblin up and running. It's pretty basic but will probably serve my needs. Now I just need to go through my old oddball photos and upload them. https://p.karp.id.au/u/tom/m/linus-torvalds-shaves-bdale-garbee/

I wrote up some introductory info about using the !gnusocial API for writing a client https://karp.id.au/a/2017/02/09/introduction-to-the-gnu-social-api/

Reddit is kind of like a securities market. You make submissions using others' work to grow the karma pie and end up counting your imaginary points
-
@archaeme @moonman It has been suggested that you could build a decent microblogging network on the Matrix federation using their existing room/federation capabilities to distribute real time updates. I think it's a nifty idea but I'm not putting my hand up.

@moonman By the time you've done scopes thoroughly you basically have Matrix so... you would want to be pretty clear where the draw the line in implementation effort

!gnusocial question - does the current API (without Qvitter) offer any way to:
1. Get a mentions stream that includes favourite/repeat/follow actions?
2. Get a favourite/repeat count for a given notice?
From my searching 1 is only possible if you happen to catch individual events via the public or network timeline, and 2 is impossible. It appears @hannes2peer wrote a NotificationStream and I'm wondering if there is anything I can fall back on if it's not available.

Flyweight is getting almost useful as a read-only client https://gs.sdf.org/attachment/266312 https://gs.sdf.org/attachment/266313

I'm probably the only iOS user in the fediverse, but anyways, I'm starting to accumulate some useful code in my client Flyweight and I've put it online. There's still quite a bit to do before it's ready for day-to-day use, which is when I'll put it on the app store. If anyone would be interested in beta testing through TestFlight let me know. https://github.com/thombles/Flyweight

I'm disappointed that Mozilla isn't prepared to take a stronger stand against DRM. At the end of the day though they're providing an equivalent of Debian's non-free repo. I'll continue to be a satisfied Firefox user, just the same as I get by just fine on Debian without installing flashplugin-nonfree.
Ironically the only people who end up using "DRM-unencumbered" forks will be the people who were never going to install the DRM anyway. They can look forward to getting their security patches slightly slower I guess.

Christ on a bike, how many people tapped "OK" at this point? My experiment with native Facebook apps has rapidly come to an end. https://gs.sdf.org/attachment/111599

Poor chap. At least now I have a good reference for putting tape over your webcam. http://www.abc.net.au/triplej/programs/hack/webcam-hackers-catch-man-wanking-demand-ransom/7668434
