'Decades before the Holocaust, Germany carried out what many historians consider the first genocide of the 20th century in Namibia. German generals targeted two land-owning ethnic groups, the Herero and Nama, killing 100,000 people; and throwing the survivors into concentration camps....descendants of the survivors are suing Germany for an admittance of genocide, an apology, and reparations...'

'This week, #Facebook made a rather strange and disturbing set of announcements. In response to concerns raised by several civil rights organizations [....] troubling was that Facebook coupled this action with the appointment of former Senator Jon Kyl (R-AZ) to conduct a similar audit in response to charges that Facebook has a βliberal biasβ¦against conservative voices.β [....] Facebookβs choice of Kyl to conduct the parallel audit with the ACLUβs Murphy. While the ACLU has a solid record of defending free speech from both the left and right of the political spectrum, Kyl has been notorious for his partisan associations with, support from, and advocacy for the very groups that have fomented anti-Muslim and anti-immigrant policies...' -

β 'In a tweak to its terms and conditions, Facebook is shifting the responsibility for all users outside the US, Canada and the EU from its international HQ in Ireland to its main offices in California. It means that those users will now be on a site governed by US law rather than Irish law.
The move is due to come into effect shortly before General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) comes into force in Europe on 25 May. Facebook is liable under GDPR for fines of up to 4% of its global turnover β around $1.6bn β if it breaks the new data protection rules....'

'Good news for anyone who uses the Internet as a source of information: A district court in Washington, D.C. has ruled that using automated tools to access publicly available information on the open web is not a computer crimeβeven when a website bans automated access in its terms of service. The court ruled that the notoriously vague and outdated Computer Fraud and Abuse Act (CFAA)βa 1986 statute meant to target malicious computer break-insβdoes not make it a crime to access information in a manner that the website doesnβt like if you are otherwise entitled to access that same information...' -

'...Still, itβs an odd face to despiseβmilquetoast, banal, unthreatening. The ambient dislike for Zuckerberg demonstrates just how deeply the early decades of the twenty-first century have fostered hostility toward tech executives. For decades, innovation has been treated, by the public and the government alike, as a benefit in and of itself. And for good reason. In the post-war era, innovation created jobs and led to growth that benefitted the middle class. Technological change is by no means a universal benefit anymore. Its primary economic effect has been an explosion of income inequality. Its primary social effect is a shredding of the fabric that sustains human community. #Facebook is an enormous addiction machine that creates depression and spreads disinformation...' -

β’ Facebook was in talks with top hospitals and other medical groups as recently as last month about a proposal to share data about the social networks of their most vulnerable patients.β’ The idea was to build profiles of people that included their medical conditions, information that health systems have, as well as social and economic factors gleaned from Facebook.
β’ Facebook said the project is on hiatus so it can focus on "other important work, including doing a better job of protecting people's data."

Yes, we have come to depend on social networks, but instead of accepting an inherently flawed Facebook monopoly, what we most need now is a new generation of social media platforms that are fundamentally different in their incentives and dedication to protecting user data. Barring a total overhaul of leadership and business model, Facebook will never be that platform....'
