i dunno if i was ever a 1990s-2000's style Blogosphere Tech-Writer-Style Techno-Optimist, but seeing where the Internet went in the last 15 years is mostly just like, quite instructive about how society has always been. as stuff started getting built, it ended up serving the same interests and satisfying the same demands as everything that came before. they were just kidding themselves that the Enlightened culture of their lofty ingroup would carry forward

a nerd: i see you're using <A> instead of <B>? that's a pretty interesting decision, especially given that most people would be using <B> to do that, and it's a lot more well-known than <A>, in fact, virtually nobody uses <A> anymore, but i'm quite interested in what <A> has to offer over <B>, so i'd really like to hear about your specific use-case

me: the rationale is as follows: my primary reason for using <A> is that i had not ever heard of <B> until you told me about it just now

it's okay to pirate software, since it's all written by computers nowadays, so you're not depriving anyone of their livelihood
