I probably need to figure out a better way to quarantine all this npm shit when I'm doing js dev for work
I sure as hell don't trust that ecosystem

Wow, somehow I had never seen the Free Speech Flag before. It's brilliant and I love it. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Free_Speech_Flag
@freemo Can you read lisp'y code btw? If so, you may find this paper on object capabilities from a language perspective helpful http://mumble.net/~jar/pubs/secureos/secureos.html
There are many ways to do object capabilities, and the above paper explores a programming language approach
@freemo here it is, non-paywalled preview version https://www.uni-weimar.de/fileadmin/user/fak/medien/professuren/Virtual_Reality/documents/publications/capsec_vr2008_preprint.pdf
The great thing about petnames is they resemble the way you remember people in real life. You can have your mom recorded as "Mom" in your contact list, and if you want to ask your Mom what Uncle Bob's contact info is, she can tell you... Mom => Uncle Bob. Petnames can also absorb central naming systems: we don't need to throw out dns, make dns a petname then dns => dustycloud.org
It's also less vulnerable to phishing.
if you aren't worried about privacy because you have "nothing to hide", given that state violation of privacy usually happens to minority and high at-risk groups, you should be aware that having "nothing to hide" is a heck of a lot of privilege
@bob @davidpgil bitcoin is definitely the worst example and suggesting proof of work as a valid election mechanism is literally advocating a plutocratic government scheme

- The W3C has structural problems, and it's membership structure *does* lead to corruption. I've criticized this myself. However the SocialWG which standardized ActivityPub was an outlier: most participants were not corporate members but were "invited experts" from the community. This was rare in the W3C.
- JSON-LD didn't come from the semantic web world, it even started as a reaction against it in some ways. Here's history from one of the JSON-LD founders, Manu Sporny: "JSON-LD and Why I Hate the Semantic Web" http://manu.sporny.org/2014/json-ld-origins-2/
- JSON-LD's inclusion in ActivityPub had nothing to do with pressure from W3C staff. Most W3C staff barely paid attention to ActivityPub or the SocialWG compared to most other working groups before it took off thanks to Mastodon's adoption

Kroeg by @puckipedia was one of the first applications to take ActivityPub implementation seriously. Puck has been rewriting it, and it sounds like things are shaping up: https://puckipedia.com/kroeg/

Peertube, an ActivityPub based alternative to YouTube, is running a crowdfunding campaign https://www.kisskissbankbank.com/en/projects/peertube-a-free-and-federated-video-platform
Comes at an important time, with YouTube blocking legitimate videos on (incorrect) copyright grounds, such as MIT's OpenCourseWare videos and the Blender Foundation's videos https://torrentfreak.com/youtubes-piracy-filter-blocks-mit-courses-blender-videos-and-more-180618/
@baldur I agree with that criticism, but I think that just because we have a well established capitalist route for proprietary software, that's not the only route to funding community oriented FOSS. I currently donate monthly to several FOSS projects and feel like I get my money's worth out of it.
But I do think that there are projects that need funding and aren't getting it. I've thought about establishing a "FOSS R&D lab" as a path forward.
are you a fan of Fantomenk's music yet?

Police break into Chelsea Manning's place with guns drawn for a "wellness check" https://theintercept.com/2018/06/05/chelsea-manning-video-twitter-police-mental-health/
> Manning was out of the country at the time of the incident, said Janus Cassandra, a close friend who was on the phone with her that night. “If Chelsea had been home when these cops arrived with guns drawn, she would be dead.”
If a friend appears to be having suicidal thoughts, DON'T CALL THE POLICE. Check in or have a friend check in yourself. Otherwise you increase their risk of death.
On that note, I guess I haven't said it lately: there are a lot of projects putting forward work into ActivityPub implementations right now. I'm very grateful for everyone across all those projects who are working on things. I know it's hard work. Not just programmers for those projects, all contributors.
For 3 years I put in a lot of stress and effort into activitypub, and many times I considered giving up. These days I'm glad I didn't. Thanks for making it worth it.
@pushcx @355E3B FWIW: whoever's interested in seeing an ActivityPub federated lobste.rs (which you could also think of as a decentralized reddit at that point) drop by #lobsters on irc.freenode.net
I'm always afraid I'm going to end a professional call absentmindedly with "Love you, bye"
