Hey, help me out... I want the #Spritely Golem demo to be as understandable as possible. I know, I haven't written all the docs yet, but what's easier for you to read:

    - All in one file, like this: https://gitlab.com/spritely/golem/blob/master/golem.rkt
    - Split into multiple files: https://gitlab.com/spritely/golem/tree/breakup

Pls let me know! Your #bikeshed feedback appreciated!

Content creators in a decentralized/federated network shouldn't be punished for creating cool things. You already did something valuable by making something people want to see; the network should help you distribute it.

Pubstrate, predecessor to Spritely (and the test implementation of ActivityPub for the standards process) used special linked-data-aware generic functions and through that could handle a variety of activity and object types. But let's face it, the most fun one was the Tombstone object: https://gitlab.com/dustyweb/pubstrate/blob/master/pubstrate/webapp/templates.scm#L324

    How is YouTube today?
    - Absolutely outstanding
    - Extremely good
    - Very good
    - Good
    - Not good

Actual prompt on YT's website. There seem to be some items missing from this scale?

@kity Btw the one AP project that does this for both the client and server AFAIK is @puckipedia's Kroeg, which I think still doesn't have users aside from @puckipedia yet, but I know she is thinking hard about these things

mastodon is not just a server (and why that's not necessarily a good thing) https://ktn.fyi/blog/posts/20190208-mastodon-is-not-just-a-server by @kity

The post is about the current trend of having "specialized" AP servers rather than the dream of general, extensible ones where you can swap out frontends using the client-to-server API. Happy to hear more people talking and thinking about this!

I had a weird experience at FOSDEM where someone I've known for a while said "I had no idea you were famous!" Kind of a weird thing to hear, I don't think of myself as particularly "famous". I don't even have a wikipedia page!

I tend to think that these days, the amount I'm known is at a pretty good level. I'm not interested in fame, just enough visibility to be able to push forward some things I care about in the world.

I also think *wanting* to be "famous" is, well, probably dangerous...

Some feedback to my talk about Racket and Guile experiences is maybe I didn't acknowledge enough how much Guile is growing right now, and how projects like Mes and Guix and etc are actually very much so helping the Guile community grow in all the right ways. I agree with that!

And to wrap up an epic day of news, guess what? The demo for encrypted, p2p deliverable content federating over ActivityPub works: https://gitlab.com/spritely/golem/commit/7a71589352fe53b55c28c7b08829cc687d5d0c89

I need to document it and update its packaging so it's easy to try out, but the core concept is delivered on! What a day, huh? #spritely #wizardstower2019

It's public now! Spritely (and myself) have been awarded a Samsung Stack Zero grant! I'm funded for the next two years to bring ActivityPub and the fediverse to the next level. Secure interactions, object capabilities, p2p content delivery, all that stuff! https://samsungnext.com/whats-next/category/podcasts/decentralization-samsung-next-stack-zero-grant-recipients/

Racket's community really ought to decide, once and for all, whether or not sxml is the "official" sexp xml format or if xexpr is. (Hint: since nobody else uses xexpr, the right decision is sxml)

The demo I'm working on at this hackathon is for a secure way of hosting content so that if your instance goes down, your content can survive, and if your content becomes popular, the whole network can help balance the work of hosting it. #activitypub #wizardstower2019

Update on this: I think I'm wrong about the attack I thought I could do, upon further investigation. I misunderstood part of the docs.

However! I do think I can do some other things, just nothing nearly as destructive as what I was writing about here. I'll keep looking. Probably I was too hasty to speak up though. My bad.

So I think I can attack any developer's machine running IPFS as a daemon to upload files from their system to the network pretty easily.

There have been some posts about ActivityPub I haven't replied to. I think a couple of them were directly trying to bait my interest, given how often I have talked about Worse Is Better and lisp machines vs unix here, and how I have been talking about bringing object capabilities to ActivityPub since before AP was even a W3C recommendation. (You don't need to throw out AP to do it.)

However, instead of just writing about things, I'll be building solutions. Announcement coming early Feb.

Today at lunch a woman dropped by our table and said our conversation was really interesting, and we invited her to sit down and join us. We made a new friend.

It made me think... when I was very young, many of the friends I made were just people I walked up to (or the reverse) and said "would you like to be my friend?" For whatever reason, this is much harder to do as an adult, though I'm not sure it needs to be.
