Do you use a self-hosted newsletter service like Mailtrain, Maily Herald, Mautic, or Postal? Any recommendations?

rixx (rixx@chaos.social)'s status on Saturday, 23-Feb-2019 09:16:30 UTC rixx The Tragedy of Systemd is a wonderful talk by Benno Rice, which I highly recommend to anybody with opinions on systemd: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o_AIw9bGogo
He talks about attitude regarding change, and contempt culture, and the ideas that made systemd happen. It's a very informed calm discussion of both systemd features and community development. It's once again confirmed my positive impression of the BSD communities. #systemd

rixx (rixx@chaos.social)'s status on Tuesday, 29-Jan-2019 09:56:08 UTC rixx Wow, if you have access to a running ubuntu laptop, and you put it in suspend mode, and then remove the hardware, you can just log on to the running system afterwards (no password needed) and look at every still open/cached application, extract passwords kept in RAM (full disk encryption, anybody?), etc.
It's been wontfixed for a couple of months: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/unity/+bug/1777415 -

If you like what you see, you might want to follow my scifi/reading account @rixxThank you, @Cheatha, for asking the question in the first place, and @tofuwabohu for not letting me procrastinate the blog post forever.

rixx (rixx@chaos.social)'s status on Saturday, 26-Jan-2019 22:00:46 UTC rixx I was asked for book recommendations from non-(white, male) authors. Even with Fediverse character limits I had to write a thread, so I put them into a blog post.

rixx (rixx@chaos.social)'s status on Monday, 07-Jan-2019 19:38:05 UTC rixx GitHub now offers unlimited private repositories on its unpaid, regular accounts: https://blog.github.com/changelog/, https://github.com/pricing
This is nice, sure, but: If at all possible, please consider using other services – your local hackerspace might have a git server, or people around here might open theirs to you if you ask – or you could host it yourself, if you have the capability and resources. #git #github

rixx (rixx@chaos.social)'s status on Saturday, 11-Aug-2018 13:12:00 UTC rixx If you ever encounter people who want to get into web development, or you want to get started yourself: Refer to the Mozilla Developer Network (MDN). Their guides and tutorials are extensive and helpful. Take for example this guide on "Applying color to HTML elements with CSS". Goes from simple+foundations to stuff like color theory.

rixx (rixx@chaos.social)'s status on Saturday, 14-Jul-2018 19:45:53 UTC rixx Look, I made a thing! After I saw the awesome blog post on city street orientations, I generated some charts for European and German cities (and refactored Geoff's IPython notebook into a script on the way). If you want to see a map of your favourite city in this style, tell me about it and I'll see what I can do.

rixx (rixx@chaos.social)'s status on Monday, 14-May-2018 11:42:30 UTC rixx A part of their information strategy is that they recommended to stop using #GPG/#PGP over stopping the mail client from rendering HTML (or loading external sources in HTML). That's disturbing.
(Also that they let themselves be roped into a publicity campaign.) -
rixx (rixx@chaos.social)'s status on Monday, 14-May-2018 11:38:47 UTC rixx So my major lesson learned from the #gpg/#pgp thing today is not to trust warnings by EFF in the future – while parts of their warning were factually correct, they were baiting for attention in annoying and unhelpful ways.
This culture of publishing exploits and issues in a publicicty focused way is disturbing. I had hoped the EFF was beyond this needless hyping of vulns. Apparently not.

rixx (rixx@chaos.social)'s status on Friday, 04-May-2018 15:47:36 UTC rixx Have you heard of StreetComplete? It's an Android app that shows you open questions/issues with OpenStreetMap in your area, and asks you to answer them.
It's made for people with no experience with #OpenStreetMap, so it shows only very simple questions that can be answered very clearly. ("What is printed on this street sign?", "What's the number on this house?")
It's available on @fdroidorg, of course! #mapping #android #apps #recommendation
