Somsants went live early 2012, we hoped other nodes would appear in other barrios de Barcelona and a new sovereign network would be born. But it never happened (yet, anyway). Back then we all ran statusnet software. I don't know the details on exactly how the transition to gnusocial happened. @mattl @mmn I think the !fediverse really took hold after the identica incident. It was as if the sun had been removed from the solar system. Just a few disorientated planets left behind. It was only then, once the overwhelmingly big central node had gone, that other nodes grew in equal conditions.

I also remember Erkan finding us and getting in touch personally by email. Pulling us together, letting us know we were not alone and creating a sense of sysadmin community. I found this old email.

    Date: 2013/7/16
Subject: Fwd: 1. security hole in your Statusnet instance
    Hola,
see below points 1 and 3-5 (don't make the patch public yet until we reach most of the SN admins)
join also the SNadmins group (1) + the mailing list (2) so next time I have not so much work to do.
Also: if you know the email of other SN admins, tell them please.
    Erkan

    Hi,
    1. we discovered today a SQL injection bug in Statusnet (SN)
I'm trying to get hold of most SN admins but my dent (1) seems not to reach you (2) this is the fix: http://somsants.net/url/113352

    2. The text at the bottom of your statusnet install says: http://somsants.net/url/3787 is a microblogging service brought to you by "Free Software Foundation". but the link is wrong (the part between " ")
    http://somsants.net/url/113353
    3. don't distribute the patch for 1. yet in public before we reach all SN admins (3)
    4. Joshua will report this soon as CVE
    5. you can reach us in the freenode irc channel #statusnet

@mcscx2 @lnxw48a1 The thought that they will now have the map of who works on what, who knows who, and who works with who, is not good. I mean, ok, microsoft is no worse than google or amazon o facebook, but Microsoft is the free software developers old archenemy by excellence. It sucks to know they have a large part of community by the balls.

@lnxw48a1 I was going to say that they'll be regretting that decision now (if the microsoft story is try), but perhaps the python team doesn't care. I mean, they migrated to github knowing full well it was a proprietary system. "That's where everyone is" I think was their logic.

    Microsoft has reportedly acquired GitHub

#Microsoft has reportedly acquired GitHub, and could announce the deal as early as Monday. Bloomberg reports that the software giant has agreed to acquire GitHub, and that the company chose Microsoft partly because of CEO Satya Nadella. Business Insider first reported that Microsoft had been in talks with GitHub recently.

@reiserin New Zealand has a big problem with introduced mamals killing native flightless birds. New Zealand is also a country where all sorts of surveillance is first deployed on tested on society. So this tracking techology will be a huge hit there, just watch.

@luke we had to turn it off, because it is completely overloaded. we're thinking about what to do. costs are too high. and we don't have much motivation to work with it right now, sorry :( but if we decide to close it, we will at least take it online for a while so people can export their data. i wish i had more energy for computer work, but all i want to do is ride my bike...

This is very disappointing to see. The screenshot shows "You're ready to go!", followed by "You can use 'Software' to install apps like these:". The apps they list, in left-right top-down order, are: VLC (free), Skype (non-free), Spotify (non-free), Slack (non-free), Discord (non-free), Corebird (free), Mailspring (free), GIMP (free), Minecraft (non-free), Android Studio (non-free), Ora (non-free), Notepad-Plus-Plus (free), Tusk (free), Brave (free), and IDEA Community (free).

That is 8 free and _7 non-free_. Also in the screenshot on the left is an Amazon icon.

We've known #Ubuntu to do these things for a while now, but I grow increasingly disappointed with each release. Ubuntu also encourages the use of proprietary software through "snaps", and advertises non-free software by default through their package repositories unless you explicitly check a box (at least in previous version) during installation to use only free repositories.
