Are there SMTP servers out there I could use to send mail? My SMTP provider is not working for now and I'm stuck.

    Thanks!

This looks like the same thing, from over a year ago:

"Up until today I have not had any problems accessing my Gmail account with Thunderbird. This morning however access was denied and I was prompted to provide a new password. i tried this but each time a message came back that it was unacceptable. In the end the only solution I found was to go in to my Google account and turn off secure apps or more precisely swich to allow unsecure apps. As soon as I did this I can access my gmail account again OK but it does beg the question why does Google NOW consider the Thunderbird application to be insecure."

Doing a bit more research on this it appears to be not a new problem, and more likely something to do with Gmail insisting upon OAuth2 authentication for IMAP.

This might be a piece of news I missed, because I havn't been a Gmail user for a long time.

It looks like Google is now claiming that Thunderbird is an "insecure app" and turning off IMAP support - with predictably dire consequences for non-techy Gmail users who use Thunderbird as a client.

So it seems that Google is doing similar monopolistic lock-in stuff that Microsoft pioneered. Thunderbird of course doesn't display ads and so this is why Google want Gmail users using the web interface or some official Google email client which does show the ads.

So from folks I put onto GNU/Linux in the past I'm getting questions like "My email isn't working and it's asking me to log in. When I try it still doesn't work."

@librelounge is starting two subseries which will follow @cwebber 's work on Spritely and @emacsen 's work on ReviewPub.

The latter is also meant to be a demonstrational but complete implementation of ActivityPub. @samae #tootgun (unless you have already finished it 😃 )

I didn't expect @librelounge to get that exciting.

I'm at the point where I'm seeing decentralization and community control of production as less of a means to slowly move away from capitalism, and more of a crucial effort to ensure our communities' survival when capitalism inevitably and imminently collapses

Once you pay attention, you start to notice that once the 18-wheelers stop coming, most of us are fucked. Especially now, when most of our possessions are designed to be ephemeral to force us to regularly replenish them

You can't rely on the internet to always give you that information once you need it. You need not only the knowledge, but the experience to keep things running after our lifelines are cut. We need DIY culture and local infrastructure now

#SoftwareLivre #SoftwareLibre #FLISoL

If Zuck really was going to end-to-end encrypt a significant fraction of Facebook data then his business model would become about as buoyant and The Titanic.

So whatever encryption he implements is likely to be backdoored or where there's a ghost participant (the GCHQ suggestion). The ghost participant could also double as an ad bot.
