The Buyerarchy of Needs, by Sarah Lazarovic.
This is important for preventing climate change, because the manufacture and sale of new things creates a lot of CO2 compared to the bottom 5 layers of the pyramid.

@fsfe Can we limit that to “share alike” licenses like GPL/AGPL so that it cannot be enclosed afterwards?

@strypey I think that being shareable isn't enough. They are public goods for practical use or research, as such must be protected by the community under strong auto-upgradable #copyleft, like [A]GPL-3.0-or-later, so as to avoid the #tragedy of #anticommons

For contrast, I think this is spot on:
For a great and frank overview of the struggles in FLOSS development and the single-developer dominance, see Ben Mako Hill’s lecture When Free Software Isn’t Better(0). Aral Balkan calls this situation trickle-down technology(1) — the false premise that enthusiasts tinkering on their own things will somehow deliver usable and meaningful FLO technology to the public. We need instead to have real funding for FLO projects designed for the general public.

It just occurred to me that it might be useful to run #Testathon events, where groups of geeks *and* average users gather for 24-48 hours to test as many of the available #FreeCode apps in a certain category as possible, (eg decision-making, or voice/video chat), and put together a report on their conclusions. Is this a thing?
