Screen recording of an Android phone, showing how to disable the Google advertising ID: Your Android phone has a so-called Google advertising ID, a unique number for your device that apps can use to recognize you. This way, tracking companies follow and record what you do on your phone, even across apps from different companies. Luckily, you can now disable the advertising ID to make it harder for companies to track you. We recommend doing this to everyone. Here's how it works: First, you have to make sure you have the newest version of the Google Play Services, since this is new functionality. Open the Play Store, and navigate to the updates section. Here, you need to check whether there's a newer version of “Google Play Services”. If so, install it and wait for the update to finish. Now, go into the settings and tap “Google” and then “Ads”. Tap “Delete advertising ID” and finally confirm with “DELETE ADVERTISING ID”. That’s it. While many apps will still continue to try and track you against your will, you have at least made it a little bit harder for them.
