During the big waves of Twitter-to-Mastodon migrations, tons of people joined little local servers with no defederation policy and were instantly overwhelmed with gore and identity-based hate. A lot of those people, understandably, did not stick around, and plenty of them went back to their other social spaces and warned others that Mastodon wasn’t safe.

This absolutely happened, but I think @kissane needs to acknowledge there was a big difference between the November Twitter Migration to Mastodon, and Bluesky’s current closed beta.

For one thing, Mastodon was already decentralized and people were rushing to any server with open registrations.

Meanwhile, you have to be invited to Bluesky—and it hasn’t decentralized yet.

But also, how will Bluesky avoid this problem once it decentralizes? We don’t know.
