    This is all nice, and it would be great if companies did things like this, but I think there's a basic education thing here which is missing.

    In the typical software-related startup the boss is not going to care about your personal growth. They're not going to care about the gender ratio, your imposter syndrome or your reluctance to ask for a raise. In fact they'll be delighted if you never ask for a raise.

    Why?

    Because this is just the way capitalism works. The capitalist only cares about profit and very little else. Even if he looks like your dad and is by all accounts a really nice guy with good intentions he has no choice in the matter. It's what Marx referred to as the coercive power of competition.

    So to have the kinds of issues described in the article is to be experiencing what John Searle called "the ungst of Man under late capitalism"
