aren't these all Unix systems, even though no Unix code made to them?
why do some people seem so determined to find excuses to write GNU out of history and deny its role and fundamental influence in the systems they use? :-(

@lxo Before #Linux, I've been using #GNU software on Solaris, NetBSD and AmigaOS (GeekGadgets).

I'm very grateful to the GNU project and I think it was a critical part of the free software ecosystem, but... 1/

...I don't buy the story that GNU built an operating system called GNU/Linux.

GNU provided great replacements for UNIX components that early distributors such as Slackware, Debian and Red Hat integrated with other packages to create a coherent Linux system.

GNU still plays a crucial role in modern Linux distros, but it's being diluted by tons of non-GNU software at all levels of the Linux stack.

The GNU toolchains is at risk of being displaced by clang / mold / ninja / lldb.

Two of the largest Linux systems by user count, ChromeOS and Android, are already 100% built with clang (including the kernel).

I'm not saying that this is awesome. The reality we live in is that there's less and less GNU in GNU/Linux, and the trend will likely continue, mainly because the project failed to update its processes and collaboration infrastructure to the 21st century.

By the way, @lxo, I'm also very grateful to *you* for all the great work you've done with Linux Libre and other projects.

It was painful to see the #GNU Project slowly decline for over a decade. In 2010, I proposed moving away from Savannah, but there were crazy people advocating for Bazaar as the official GNU VCS, and refusing to use git because it's not GPLv3 😩

Excessive rigidity and lack of common sense caused mind share to wander away to other projects. 4/

@patrick Several large free software projects moved to self-hosted instances of GitLab a while ago. What is GNU waiting for?
      #gnu #git #gitlab

@codewiz Even moving to git, they wouldn't have moved to GitHub (or GNU would have lost all meaning) and that's what the current generation is interested in. There's a big reluctance to go for other git hosts or other workflows: As coreboot admin I hear that rather often (we use Gerrit)
