   Cat Two, the forgotten feral kitten...

   Those following along, enjoyed this #Thread about our biggest and best cat, Buddy, a 25 pound (11kg) family member.

   While working outside, I thought I spotted a rat! (They do run across yards, and hide under decks.)

   I studied the spot. Something was moving, but not a rat. I peeked with a light.... I saw eyes?

     Maya is getting old now. We've prepared ourselves to bury her, for 2 years in a row. She's crippled with arthritis, cataracts, & frail
     & then.. She started jumping around the room, up on counters (NEVER BEFORE!) Caught in the sink getting a drink!
     As anyone with cats will say, there's always more photos. And more cats. the white one, Jasper, is yet to be featured. Tune in next week for more.

     She loves her brush. Hugs it & brushes her own face with it.

     She has her own talents. She loves her face brushed. So much so, she brushes it herself. Try to take the brush from her?

     Years ago, my hairbrush was disappearing and I'd find it in her arms like this, and have to fight her for it.

     I heard cats fighting, so I spoke to her through the camera. She sat like this and watched the camera all night

     I can only add one video at a time.
     Maya and Jasper were beginning to get along pretty well. She still won't let him look her in the eyes. When we drive, she lays on my wife's lap, and cats can step over her, as long as they don't make eye contact.

     When one steps over her ,my wife covers her eyes, or a holy war will break out.

     I tell you, she has caught a mouse. She won't eat it or anything gross, she's a princess. But she will eat flies. She's a great fly hunter.

     At the camp, a fly or moth is inside, and heading for the light above the chimney. The *crying* she does for a housefly.. Imagine what she does for chicken?

     Voice of an angel 😂

     I've mentioned separately, many times, that this cat has an unusual voice. It's a chirp, a warble, a guttural wimper, but it's not a *meow*.
     In the beginning, we thought it was her coming into Heat for the first time.. that odd projected sound. But nope, that's her normal voice. But if you try to record it.. She's quiet.

     "I don't just do the voices. I hear them. "

     His name is Jasper.
     He'll get his own Caturday thread next week, he's the third cat in this series..

     It wasn't as easy as this, there's some things you need to know. Jasper was abused. He's dysfunctional in many ways. She is the new Alpha cat.. And she makes him wait to eat.

     And she won't allow him to look at her. Everything is going smoothly.. then he forgets, and looks at her..

     TRAVELING WITH CATS

     Cats are family too. They limit our travel though. We wrestle them into the van, sometimes they are content to just watch the world roll by, other times, they need to be in their kennel..

     This is much later, after Jasper stopped throwing up in the van, and Maya started allowing him to sit next to her.
     They make at least a few trips each week. Still don't like them.

     Maya has another side.
     My kids grew up with Buddy, but moved out without ever seeing this side of Maya: when Buddy passed, besides being grief stricken, she was now (by default) the ALPHA CAT.
     Which wasn't important, while there was just her. She swats, bites & hissy fits on demand.

     As a black cat, she seems attracted to black birds. She hates crows. FN Hates them.

     SURPRISE!

     Suddenly, she was an only child.
     When Buddy passed away, we were all pretty upset. She'd never known another cat. She thought Buddy was her mother? And she was heartbroken 😿

     My wife insisted we replace Buddy, for the good of all of us.. And we went looking. Maya waited at home. For some reason, we never thought to include her in the selection process?

     "Parents are jerks!"

     They went to find another cat

     FAT CAT, BARE BELLY, WEIGHT

     It was getting pretty hard to manage with 40 pounds of cats. When we went somewhere, it was two armloads to the van, and two containers to carry them elsewhere. That PET bed was for 8 pound cats. By the time I got it, she was 15 pounds.
     She was stressed by being Spayed. Licked the fur off her belly sometimes.

     Seems like yesterday, she was a kitten.. now has a middle-age spread

     Before her *dad-brother* died..
     Her first love was 'Mr. Mom'.
     He raised her as a single parent.
     All the fighting & teasing, they loved each other to death.. to his death..

     There were family vacations, trips to the beach sandcastle competitions; they had their own jogging stroller, being too heavy for small wheels.

     She looks misleadingly small next to Buddy https://mstdn.ca/@Rasta/110242062351441396 the gentle giant.

     Maya never knotted, she was short-hair.

     Buddy, would lay in the bathtub and the belly hairs would turn into painful dreadlocks. He was strong, but I'd wrestle him a few hours each week to cut the knots out and trim him for summer.
     Maya, who is very jealous, insisted she get in on the act. So.. sure, why not, cooler for summer? Haircut? Little off the back?

     RELAX, in Sweater Weather, she's an indoor cat.

     Ref back to BUDDY (start of thread), she never learned to wash her own face; Buddy did that for her. Just like a mother. Like most energetic kittens, she was always poking him, trying to get him going. He'd tolerate her, then just plunk a paw on her & hold her down.
     There's feral qualities. Survival skills. But she learned quickly, it's so much better INSIDE? There's heat, food & water on demand. Princess!

     Maya, the *Princess* You'll see why...

     If there's clean laundry? say it? on it.
     if there's pillows, she's on it.
     if there's pillows with a bed on top of it, on a sofa.. she's near Utopia.

     Her own sofa, her own bed, her 'anything I lay on, I own' privileges.
     LINED CARDBOARD BOX!

     She's very spoiled. She won't go out an open door. She remembers eating crickets. Cold nights. Lonely.

     Not now. "BOW TO ME!"

     There was a tiny kitten under my deck. Not big enough to be alone, but no mother, or other kittens.
     No one was coming back.😿

     Food is nice, but there's no water there, so I put wet food out and water to entice the tiny beast.

     It took a little while, but I caught *it*.
     Palm sized fur & dirt, filth, ear mites and fleas and sickly looking.

     Must keep away from our indoor cat.
     We'll need to see the Vet

     Cats live longer inside. Buddy was very spoiled as an only *child* until this scrawny female showed up. We called her Maya.
     Feline Leukemia, Fleas, Ear Mites, & Worm Treatment. Just to get in the door. $600. She's still paying that off.

     Each cat has a personality. Maya is a professional disappearing act. She prefers 'under' vs 'over'.
     Excellent hiding skills. Has held off search parties for 16 hrs.
