The trip to Tokyo was 4 hours long, with many local trains and a long Shinkansen section from Shin-Kobe to Shin-Yokohama 🚅

Even though I have to change 7 different trains, the schedules are usually aligned to minimize waiting time on the platform.

別に!There's a Shinkansen every 10 minutes, and if I wait 20 minutes I can ride a Nozomi (the fastest N700).

@codewiz is it true, that Japanese Railroad employees have harsh rules, if a train is overdue for maybe a minute, the job is in strong danger?

@alm10965 I suspect it's mostly self-imposed discipline and, secondarily, peer pressure.

Like many Japanese workers, JR employees take great pride in precision and excellence. Any mistake, particularly those causing visible service disruption, make them look bad in front of everyone. A spontaneous and genuine apology would be expected.

@alm10965 With this level of self-, consciousness, there's no need for the boss to do anything to make a Japanese employee feel humiliated.

If an employee goes like "it's not my fault" or "come on, no big deal", *that* would seriously put their career in danger. Nobody likes a coworker who won't properly take responsibility and apologize. They'd be labeled as "selfish", and punished with silence or something.

@funnylookinhat That's why I decided to break it up in two parts, with a stop in Arima Onsen to relax! Shikoku is awesome, I should come back with more time.

Did you get to see Dogo Onsen? And how was it?

@codewiz I did almost that same trip a few months ago. I started in Matsuyama and transferred to shinkansen in Okayama. Total time was about 7.25 hours I think. It was a great trip!

      Looks like you're having fun!

I arrived in Tokyo just in time to join a birthday dinner for my friends' daughter.

Her mother told me that she wanted a kakigori machine (かき氷機), and since it sounds more like a present for me than for her 😋

Ah, sorry Bic Camera! Found the same product on amazon.co.jp at a much lower price, including free next-day delivery.

They also gave me an additional ¥1000 off for the first order with the Android app (which I will promptly uninstall after receiving the package tomorrow).

      Testing the new kakigori machine...

First, add matcha syrup. I insisted for not adding any sugar so we can experience the full bitterness of the green tea powder.

Then, add adzuki paste to contrast the bitterness of matcha.

For kakigori, we should have bought a more slushy, chunky kind.

Complete the composition with home-made mochi (white) and kinako mochi.

Kinako (黄粉 = yellow flour) is a fine powder of roasted soybean. It tastes a little like peanuts.

      2. Kinako
Kinako (黄粉 or きなこ) is roasted soybean flour, a product commonly used in Japanese cuisine. In English, it is usually called "roasted soy flour". More precisely it is "roasted whole soy flour". Usage of the word kinako appeared in cookbooks from the late Muromachi period (1336–1573). Kinako means "yellow flour" in Japanese. Production Kinako is produced by finely grinding roasted soybeans into powder. The skin of the soybean is typically removed before pulverizing the beans, but some varieties of kinako retain the roasted skin. Yellow soybeans produce a yellow kinako, and green soybeans produce a light-green product. Kinako, being composed of soybeans, is a healthy topping and flavouring which contains B vitamins and protein. Compared to boiled soybeans, however, the protein in kinako is not easily digested. Usage Kinako is widely used in Japanese cooking, but is strongly associated with dango...

My friends pointed out that those covered in kinako are actually warabi mochi (蕨餅).

Unlike regular mochi made from rice, warabi mochi is made from bracken starch (or potato starch).
