Tonight by the calendar is the ancient Celtic festival of Lughnasadh, the first harvest. The bones of this song were first collected from tradition in 1568, called "Alan-a-Maut"; the name John first appears in 1624.

This to me is the canonical version, recorded during lockdown simply and acoustically by the man that made it famous in the modern era. Steve Winwood, "John Barleycorn Must Die"
