      5. Russian Roulette II: The Next Worlds
Official English version of Russian Roulette II: The Next Worlds/Русская рулетка 2: Закрытые планеты (Logos/Buka, 1999) that was used as a cover disc of a Polish magazine "PC World Komputer" issue 02/2000.The world after nuclear war... The planet is covered with radioactive dust, acid clouds have clothed the sky. Lost towns are lying in ruins. Those who survived the War have split into two hostile groups. Tired of war atrocities, not content with the life of blood, vice, and fear, honest civilians work hard to bring back the times of peace and happiness. Merciless and wild death-hunters oppose them.A dying old man, the father of our hero, reveals to his son the secret of a mysterious installation standing in the deserved park. The legend says that it's a portal built up by an ancient civilization who disappeared a long time ago. The portal is able to transfer a man to another world located in a different dimension or on another planet. The old man gives him a medallion that is the key to the portal. Unfortunately the portal was stripped of its important parts by fellows ignorant of its true essence. Thus to make it possible to to activate the portal, one has to return all stolen crystals. But the old man himself proved to be too weak and cowardly to find out whether it's all true.So our hero, having got to learn the mystery of both portal and medallion, dares to activate the weird device and leaves to seek for other worlds, more peaceful and prosperous. The basic idea of the game project ( 'The Next Worlds') is to connect classical 3D action with sophisticated adventure storyline. A player will be able not only to fight with variety of silly enemies, he will have to think before every shot in order not to make any harm to his friends, or those, who can became his friends. It is not absolutely necessary, of course. The game allows to play in 'kill them all' style, but the fighting skill level of such a bloodthirsty player must be very high. Another game idea is to provide a great freedom of actin to any player. He is not longer a prisoner of his vehicle. It is natural to have a possibility to leave the cabin and walk a little among the hills (it is very dangerous to walk through the city). As in real life it will be possible to get to any vehicle that is not moving (for example the parked lorry or even heavy bulldozer). And as in real life the owners of this stolen vehicle will call the police or try stop the player by themselves. There will be a possibility to leave the burning vehicle or falling flyer. If the player will manage to reach a friendly city or any empty machine on foot he will obtain another chance to win.All the worlds in the game are unique. Some of them are high technology worlds, some of them are gothic ones and so on. In the game player will discover the specific vehicles on each level and he will be able to try all of them. For example, it is better to sell the flyer an buy an armored racing car on the road planet. In some worlds it is possible to buy a domestic flying dino with a rocket launched above the saddle or a great armored elephant with a cockpit on the back. There are seven planets with one portal on each. Every portal is the gate to the next planet, except the last one - it's a "huge switch"Power stations, necessary to run portals are disassembled into parts and stolen by aborigines (the set of parts vary from world to world). To obtain the parts the player has to accomplish missions assigned by local gangs. In most cases the same thing can be obtained in different ways. The success (and failure) to accomplish the missions forms the reputation: for employer - always, for enemy - only when survivals (if any) tell theirs who is in charge for trouble.RUSSIAN ROULETTE II - THE NEXT WORLDS--- System requirements ---Minimum: Pentium 200, 32Mb RAM, 40Mb free on windows swap file partition.Recommended: Pentium II 233+, 64Mb RAM, 40Mb free on windows swap file partition, AGP 3D accelerator, Sound CardWindows 95/98, Microsoft DirectX 5 or above, Intel RSX 3D.--- How to play The Next Worlds ---There are six planets lost in the Space. Once they were a single ring of worlds connected through Galactic portals. Now the planets are devastated, the portals disassembled. Your goal is to collect all lost portal parts ("artifacts") and repair the portals. The artifacts can be captured in a battle or be granted to you by local authorities as a reward for your services. You find yourself on one of the six planets. A strange construction behind you is the very portal you ought to activate. The building crowned with a flag is the Draft Commission. Get inside, enroll and get your first mission from the recruit officer. Most possible, you'll have to join a team. Keep close to your guide and he will bring you to the destination point. You also have a map where the route and mission objectives are clearly shown.Remember: you are free to change or abandon any of your vehicles! Any thing slightly resembling a tank, a plane, a helicopter, a mechos, a grasshopper, a dragon, an elephant or a motor-car is the very thing it seems and you can use it as a transport or fighting machine.--- Controls ---The game supports keyboard, mouse and joystick. The keyboard controls can be easily customized through the Main Menu. Not all vehicles use all keyboard combinations described in the Menu. Don't try to move a road-roll's turret: it doesn't have one!

It's very clearly an in-house translation that was never meant for a wide release. It's bad, but in pretty funny ways. And you can still tell what the intent was. And also OMG LOOK AT THIS 🤣

@DialupDownload For sure. The way I was able to eventually track it down was pretty wild as well. The kind of connection of random occurrences that make me happy I'm the kind of person who cares about this shit. 😄

So I took a look at the English-language demo version of Russian Roulette 2, and the translation has clearly been properly corrected & edited. Also saw a few mentions of the game being published at least in Europe by a Canadian company Microforum, including an Italian translation. I wish I could get my hands on the proper English retail release.
