It's taken 6 months, but my latest labour of love is finally complete! You can now explore fully documented and annotated source code for Elite on the #NES, reconstructed by hand from a disassembly of the original ROM. Please enjoy!

And for fans of the 1984 Acornsoft version of Elite, you'll be glad to know that the core of the 1991 #NES version (around 30% of the 128K ROM) is essentially the original #BBCMicro code - the first (and best!) version. Clocking in at over 112,000 lines of 80-column text, the annotated source code can be a bit overwhelming, so my next plan is to add the #NES version to https://www.bbcelite.com along with lots of deep dives into how this masterpiece of 6502 works under the hood. Watch this space!

This video explains why porting #Elite to the #NES hardware was deemed impossible:

@codewiz Yeah, that’s a great video! It’s part of the reason why I did this disassembly - to fill in the blanks and explain *exactly* how this impossible port works. 😀
