1 Jan 1983 is considered the official birthday of the #Internet. Prior to this, the various computer #networks did not have a standard way to communicate with each other. A new communications protocol was established: Transfer Control Protocol/ Internetwork Protocol (TCP/IP). This allowed different kinds of #computers on different networks to "talk" to each other. ARPANET and the Defense Data Network officially changed to the TCP/IP standard on 1 Jan 1983.

    1. System that Made Internet Possible Turns 25
Twenty-five years ago a couple of guys switched a then-obscure military agency over to a new computer standard called TCP/IP. The switch made the Internet possible. One of those guys was Vinton Cerf, who is commonly called "The Father of the Internet."
