    TIL that Windows 9x's "found new hardware" process has a hardcoded artificial delay of EIGHT seconds. It waits 3 seconds before displaying the device name and type it got from the driver, and then another 5 seconds before proceeding. I want hours of my life back. 😭

      @dosnostalgic I sense some psychological / customer care reason here; hypothesis:
      If your PC doesn't detect your ISA card (which it can't) in the millisecond it takes it to look, then humans will insist that it didn't have a "proper" look. Wouldn't change anything. So, to avoid a lot of "no, there's really no secret way to make it go and check the back room whether any nonstandard LPT port ISA cards are in stock" support calls, the installer makes sure that it *looks* like it done some good and…
