The most important thing mastodon users need to realize is that you don't need to be on mastodon.social to be part of the network. Mastodon is just one server in the larger federation.

@lambadalambda This was also why #Identica was such a central part of the network while it was part of our network. Federation is the central advantage and disadvantage of our sites, so we need to make sure that everyone knows about it.
TL;DR: Promote the OStatus federation over $SITE or even $SOFTWARE and we'll all benefit.

@lambadalambda @jansegers what if :s/flagship/special snowflake/

@tijagi @lambadalambda @jansegers yes?

@tijagi @lambadalambda @jansegers it's lelouch vi britannia not lelouch emacs britannia for a reason
-
@lambadalambda Won't happen. Ask quitter.se about that. (Or identi.ca in earlier days.)
-
@vinzv There were already people on quitter/se who valued the freedom of federation before it became popular, and I remember how they made an effort to teach the new users who came later. I don't know if that same culture pre-existed on mastodon.
-
Didn't hannes2peer close registration during some time just for that reason? To avoid another identica?
-
@tuttle mastodon.social is closed now too (with having 40.000 registered accounts).
I dunno if there's such a helpful culture over they but I guess there is.
-
@vinzv How many users did identica have, do you know?
