I was checking mastodon for a bit and I stumbled on this.
Funny to know that being on mastodon is being part of the google tracker system. https://loadaverage.org/attachment/3523221
- Bob Mottram repeated this.

@numimyon @mangeurdenuage a ping whenever someone visits the page. With enough pings Google can know who browses what (unless you're using a Tor browser). Dossiers of who visits what, when, are all actionable/saleable.

--what kind of information can Google actually get by using one of their fonts--
A lot actually.
First they get your IP.
Second they get your web browser fingerprint.
Third they get the website your were on.
Fourth they will automatically do some cross website analytic with the other websites your IP and web browser fingerprint were flashed on.
You have a unique ID attributed to you and and more than 3500 entities (registered middle 2016) will buy and sell whatever they can acquire from your ID even if they don't know what to do with it yet.
This is commercially called #BigData or less commonly #DataMining or more logically #spying.
You could say that you don't care about this, that you have nothing of value or more likely nothing that will influence your life.
And I will ask you "Are you sure about that ?" can you tell the future ? Do you know witch laws will be made in the future ?
Do you know what will be reprimanded or not ?
Fortunately people have done a great and precise work about today's use of data and even meta-data to help you understand what is happening and in what direction the internet is heading.
So I suggest that you watch the conference of #33C3 about Corporate surveillance, digital tracking, big data & privacy.
https://media.ccc.de/v/33c3-8414-corporate_surveillance_digital_tracking_big_data_privacy
And more recently @mikegerwitz was at libreplanet 2017 and made a nice conference that correlates with our discussion.
See:

Please watch them it is very important for you to understand what is happening.
Has for mastodon and the exaggeration that you suggest.
I predicted the datamining of mastodon some time ago because of the repetitive unethical actions of it's maintainers either if it was censoring or the fact that their was little sharing of the knowledge/documentation which makes the creation of other mastodon instances very difficult without the approval of the developers of mastodon.
It would also be better if mastodon wouldn't break the standards already established by Ostatus and more but there is already other forks like PostActive or the Plemora frontend that doesn't break the GS federation.
That is why I encourage the creation of lots of small instances of GS instead of making another twitter/tumblr which mastodon seems to have taken the path off.
I suggest that you look at the map of the fediverse there is a lot of instances other than mastodon if you are motivated.
http://www.fediverse.org/
I suggest to anyone to look at the unofficial guides that multiple maintainers and volunteers of GS helped to make so that people can with more ease make other instances.

I hope this responds to your questions.
I wish you a good day.
