   On gnusocial there isn't anything to stop particular servers being Twitterized. If I were so inclined (I'm not) I could insert commercial crap into my stream in exchange for sufficient remuneration.
   
   Something like that was discussed in the Q&A of Eben Moglen's "Freedom in the Cloud" talk from 2010. At least if that situation happens there's a direct transaction between the advertiser and the server admin, cutting out the usual middlemen, like Google or Facebook.

     @hector indeed, so if for example a Beaglebone retailer wanted me to post an ad on their behalf and paid me to do it I don't think I'd object because their aims would be broadly in line with my own.
