Twitter in general just...isn't great even at the best of times.

I've seen, and I imagine you have too from what you describe, a lot of people you'd assume to be fairly decent, end up idiots, or just downright cruel, through twitter bullshit.

I sincerely hope this fate does not come to the Fediverse+Mastodon.
