On the self and the tribe, this is always dialectical. Some years ago I tried exploring this within the Noble Ape simulation, and the stuff I did there is only the tip of the iceberg in terms of the potential of social simulations. We all strive to be individuals, to make our own decisions and lives. But at the same time to think is also to be a function of the tribe. The internal dialogue itself is a construction of social history.

Also the notion of the self is somewhat arbitrary. When you start doing social simulations it soon becomes apparent that there may be other information animals at other scales, just as individual cells of the body are not necessarily aware of this year's hair fashions.
