If you want to engage in some Fediverse introspection, ask yourself: why is it Mastodon that is the locus of the negative dicussion in the other corners that exist?  Why not hubzilla, diaspora, friendica, or so on?  There's plenty of competing projects.  Except those projects aren't competing and never have been really.  There's a lot of overlap, and even instances where those projects share code and developers, and have collaborated on standards.
