I genuinely believe that the defining question of this time will be "Is democratic rule even a good thing?"
Obviously the defining question of last century was that communistic rule was an unmitigated failure, but now it seems that it's democracy's time to fail.
Is democracy too dependent on small-population politics to succeed on large scales? Is 10 million the breaking point? What about ethnic questions? Democracy works well during the mono-ethnicity nordic model, but we can see Sweden implode even as Norway and Finland continue strong, with comparable GDP, population, infrastructure, and only differing in amount of ethnic disparity.
"May you live in interesting times" has never seemed more of a curse as today, but it's still fascinating.
