I think if you want to learn programming Ruby is a pretty good language to start with. It does not have the steep verbosity of Java, the wat factor of JavaScript, or the explosiveness of C. Ruby is simple and elegant, and learning it immediatelly opens you up to job opportunities for Rails projects (or open source contributions to things like GitLab, Discourse, or indeed Mastodon)

P.S. Don't *start* with Rails though. Rails is like high level mount that drops from the end boss.
