Hm. I feel like I just wasted a lot of time. Trying switching Paperclip to Shrine, but found it too complicated in the end, plus imageflow isn't even production-ready turns out.
Then I made it so youtube & co don't get embedded until you click a button, like on Discord, but the resulting code is messy and the dimensions don't match up between the thumbnail and the video for some reason. I feel annoyed π¦

One of the top requests is to display link previews in the stream like native media attachments. But something's gotta give, because as it is right now the toots go out to the stream way before the card is fetched.

@Gargron hey, I'm late to the party, but what would be your position on updating the thumbnails? For example, some "news" sites use a spicy thumbnail and an hour or so later update to the real thumbnail, and that's why Facebook needs to re fetch after some time.

@fermuch we do refetch'em! i don't remember what the caching period is set to, but it's not infinite

@Gargron oh wow, that's nice! How do you handle it? X fetches after it is posted, or do you try to re fetch if the cache expired and a user wants to see the content?
The former would mean doing some work even if no one sees the content, and the later would be harder to implement, since it'll need to check and purge the cache.
I'm not sure what's better, but I'm trying to implement a system like that for one of my apps, and would love to know what you found to be better/easier (no pressure!)

@fermuch It's time based. So if say, after 2 weeks you post the URL again, instead of reusing old data it re-fetches it anew.
