@modeofexistence I'm not certain, but I think JS is the only client-side scripting language supported by default in all major browsers ...
-
#ShowerThought the problem with the browser is the "the". We need many, different browsers for work, conversation, entertainment etc
-
Maybe we need 7 different types of browser?

@ubergeek @alcinnz I haven't tried any desktop clients for #Mastodon but I believe some GUI ones already exist @gargronÂ
-
@alcinnz website-based surveillance is a bad habit of website operators, not part of the web. No surveillance on #Wikipedia (for example)
-
@alcinnz client-side apps are dominant over mobile-friendly websites on handhelds, but that trend hasn't been backported to desk/laptops
-
@alcinnz maybe because desk/laptop uses tend to be too savvy to get locked into #OneRingToRuleThemAll app stores (like Goggle Play/ Apple)
-
@h @alcinnz I've seen using #Electron compared to bolting more engines on a square plane instead of making it aerodynamic
-
@h @alcinnz I like the concept (design one, deploy everywhere) but I suspect there are better ways to implement it.
-
@h @alcinnz Really the problem is server packages that can't handle intermittent internet connections (and Windows users ;)
-
@h @alcinnz if every server package had something like the #NomadicIdentity of #Hubzlla everyone could self-host on their own device
-
@h fire away, I'm keen to learn more (did you read that full set of posts though?)
-
@h no worries, share more when you have time (relevant links welcome), and I'll read when I do (off to bed soon)
-
@alcinnz I don't understand. If I serve a set of static HTML pages using Apache, how does it get told any of the info you mention?
-
@alcinnz surely this is info harvested by analytics engines using JS and cookies and other bolt-ons to the web, not pure HTML/CSS?
-
@alcinnz ok, but that's not "pure HTTP", it's a webserver default. It's not needed to make the web work (#Indymedia say they don't log IPs)
-
@alcinnz I agree with you that desktop apps don't have to be Windows-style spyware that phone home to the companies that make them ...
-
@alcinnz ... but in either case spyware is a decision by developers (or more likely their bosses), not inherent to web or desktop/ mobile
-
@modeofexistence ... whereas PHP/ Perl /Python etc are only used on the server-side. Anyone who knows more about this, please jump in here
