Anyone familiar with #Slack replacements got any comments on this?
https://github.com/bigokro/gruff/issues/1#issuecomment-378920266

@ninjatrappeur I think one of the common misconceptions in conversations like these is that web designers are geeks ...
-
@ninjatrappeur ... sometimes they are geeks as well, but mostly they're people who 30 years ago would have been laying out magazine ...
-
@ninjatrappeur ... not building or operating the presses that print magazines. That's why #Slack is more attractive to them than IRC or XMPP
-
@sheogorath do you know of anyone doing community hosting of Mattermost, who could set the #Gruff team up with one?
-
@sheogorath hmm, this page makes me suspicious that Mattermost might be Open Core
https://about.mattermost.com/pricing/
-
@tofeo @sheogorath the main difference between #Riot and #Mattermost (or #RocketChat) seems to be that Riot is federated (using #Matrix) ...
-
@tofeo @sheogorath Mattermost / RocketChat aim to replace the user experience of the app itself, but not the "everybody goes there" vibe ...
-
@tofeo @sheogorath for people who like #Slack mainly for the "everybody into the pool" network effect, Riot might be a better option ...
-
@tofeo @sheogorath in a nutshell; are you look for a chat app for teams getting work done in private, or a chat based social network?
-
@tofeo @sheogorath my hunch is Matrix is the better choice in the long term for engaging with outside contributors, supporting users etc ...
-
@tofeo @sheogorath ... because if / when it takes off, people will be able to login to your Matrix server with their existing Matrix account
-
@tofeo @sheogorath AFAIK that's not what MM/ RC are designed for, and I don't know if or when they will support any federation protocols
-
@sheogorath @tofeo have you tried #RocketChat? How does its feature set compare with that of Mattermost?
-
@deejoe @sheogorath thanks for the link. I had thought "open core" was a widely used term for releasing just enough code for #OpenWashing
-
@deejoe @sheogorath like what #GitHub do ...
http://tom.preston-werner.com/2011/11/22/open-source-everything.html
-
@deejoe @sheogorath ... and what Mattermost appear to do. For me it's a good reason not to use software if there's a free code replacement
-
@deejoe @sheogorath thing is, all #Mattermost plans are self-hosting. The prices are what they charge you to use some components of the code
-
@deejoe @sheogorath unless I'm seriously misreading the pricing page?
-
@sheogorath @deejoe which makes me less inclined to use Mattermost and more likely to use #RocketChat (unless they do something similar?)
-
@tofeo I suspected some people might find that. Did you try Rocket.chat or just Mattermost? There is a free test server at open.rocket.chat
-
@tofeo No, not federated. Only tried the demo at open.rocket.chat so can't comment on install. I found it easier to use than #Riot
-
@tofeo one more that might be worth evaluating is #Zulip. They offer gratis hosting for free code projects. Demo here: chat.zulip.org
-
thanks @sheogorath would you Spectrum is more standalone (like RC/ MM/ Zulip) or more social / federated like Gitter, Riot, XMPP clients etc
-
@sheogorath they have no plans to do federation, even with other #Spectrum instances, so seems superficially similar to MM/ RC/ Zulip ...
