So you have three protocols. Pumpio, Diaspora and Gnusocial these are not capable of connect between each other, but hubzilla, friendica... are capable to connect at the same time with Diaspora, gnusocial and Mastodon, like a bridge. You have reason @Steven Yetter , as far as I know when two servers establish a connection, for example, between Diaspora and hubzilla, these two servers begin to share some information, and while the connections are growing, more content could arrive to your timeline.
