Why the hell is it needed to know by heart how to convert from and to IEEE 754... at first university year.

Nobody ever manually calculates floating point numbers without using a computer which does the job.

There's no chance ever that you find yourself in a situation when you need to calculate a floating number in binary and there's no tools whatsoever which can help you out.

Understanding how to compute IEEE 754 numbers won't teach you barely shit about how computers work.

    WHY.

I'm absolutely angry at how confusing yet. I've been five hours straight trying to figure this out... but my university's resources assume a shitton of calculations like "haha, you silly student, you're supposed to convert long numbers from base 10 to hexadecimal to binary in less than a blink of an eye! Why would I explain this to you??? Pay more attention at classroom next time and get a brain that's not the size of a fly's!"

And I don't even know why I want to know this.

I'm angry at how confusing this is, yet I feel like I've learned way harder things with much less effort. Five hours straight trying to figure this out, but my university's resources assume a shitton of stuff like "haha, you silly student, you're supposed to convert long numbers from base 10 to hexadecimal to binary in a blink of an eye! Why would I explain this to you? Pay more attention at classroom and get a brain that's not the size of a fly's!"

And I mean, converting stuff like 2'5675*10ยนโต to 1'23E415A*2โตยน to 1'0010001111100100000101011010 * 2โตยน. It's just assumed. Never explained where the exponent comes from or how are you supposed to do this in an exam without an expensive calculator (and even then I still don't know how would you convert the exponent's base).

It's 1 am. I have to wake up at 7 am. Tomorrow's my last chance to pass this. Thanks to this, I don't know if I'll be able to do 2nd year. I can't do this.

...somehow managed to learned it in 15 minutes. In the last 15 minutes before the exam.

Truly, I must be an unique kind of retarded.
