switching.social (switchingsocial@mastodon.at)'s status on Monday, 25-Jun-2018 21:15:56 UTC switching.social I would *love* to include XMPP and Conversations, because they're both really great, if only there was a stable beginner-friendly sign-up site somewhere.

ninjafoss (ninjafoss@ieji.de)'s status on Monday, 25-Jun-2018 21:19:31 UTC ninjafoss @switchingsocial @colegota yes, because someone has to pay for the servers and there is no free lunch. If we want ethical software and services, we also have to pay for them or selfhost. People should also learn, that paying money for a service is necessary to not being the product themselves. Letting pay others (admins, tech people) isn't very sustainable

Colegota El Villano (colegota@gnusocial.villanos.net)'s status on Monday, 25-Jun-2018 21:34:30 UTC Colegota El Villano @switchingsocial about Signal... There is no more nor less privacy. You have !privacy or not. And we have no privacy if we need a Google account to use Google services to use Signal.
Also we can't trust in a company that don't allow other servers to federate and want to have all the control about his product. That's just a silo. -
Colegota El Villano (colegota@gnusocial.villanos.net)'s status on Monday, 25-Jun-2018 21:45:09 UTC Colegota El Villano @switchingsocial conversations.im it's a pay account, it's free for 6 months, then you have to pay.
And as @ninjafoss said it's important to pay for services or make donations if we want to have our own free and privacy care tools.
That account it's 8$ a year.
Anyway you can use an external account (or several ones). I do use
https://www.suchat.org/crear-una-cuenta-xmpp/
and I use to recommend it for Spanish speaking people. I'm sure there will be lot of servers in other languages and create an account is too easy.
You just need to explain that you need to create the account and then choose a client... or more than one.
You also mention recently that it's easy to register a !nextcloud account at @disroot. And if you already have a disroot.org account, that account it's also a fully featured !xmpp account, so no need to register a new one.
I can't find it so difficult, and "whatsapp people" that use Conversations have no problem at all. -
