I'm not technically skilled to answer. All I know is that I have this motoE without microg installed and all my apps worked fine (even Signal official .apk) BUT on another device I had to install #microg to get #garmin and other "commercial" apps properly working.

It is said that microg is a "layer" to allow apps work with minimal connection to google services.

Classical Convenience vs. Privacy issue, I presume.
