   If you're planning to buy a new laptop, just wait a bit more. The 8th gen intel processors seem to have a huge leap(+50%) in terms of performance compared to previous 7th generation.

     but then I'd still buy second hand laptops - I bought a thinkpad T420 at 30% of the new laptop price and it is running good for four years.

     I'd probably buy it after 4 years, second hand. My current laptop's i5-2520M has a single thread rating of ~1500 in cpubenchmark.net, which is comfortably enough for all tasks that I require. The new i3-8th gen has ~2150.
