Woo! As you may have seen from that previous boost, Mastodon 2.9 is now out, featuring a new single column interface:

    https://blog.joinmastodon.org/2019/06/mastodon-2.9/

This is, IMHO, a huge step forward for getting non-technical people onto Mastodon ๐Ÿ‘

Instead of the Tweetdeck-style interface, there's now a default single-column timeline which is much less scary.

(The multicolumn original is still an option in Settings, and those who currently use multicolumn will continue to see it by default.)

For those asking when their instance will be updated to 2.9, the best person to ask is the admin of your instance.

To find out who is your instance's admin, just log out and go to your instance's front page. Scroll down and you will see "Administered by:" with a link to your admin's account.

Reminder that if your Mastodon instance has been updated to 2.9 or higher, you can see the new simpler one-column interface very easily:

      1. Go to preferences/settings

      2. Untick the box marked "Enable advanced web interface". (To go back to the multicolumn interface, just tick the box again.)

@switchingsocial FWIW I had to sign out, delete cookies & sign in again to get the new 2.9.0 interface on mstdn.io

@xosem nothing prevents #gnusocial admins or #pleroma and #mastodon admins to collect personal users data. With larger federation this is automatically prevented as each admin has just few of the own users, and not much personal data from remote users.
