I wonder when people will realize Eugen is exploiting the Pareto principle

The pareto principle works like this. It states that, for many events, roughly 80% of the effects come from 20% of the causes. So 80% of the users here will be on 20% of the instances. So people will concentrate to a few places. This is why the instance picker is pointless. It will never help, and people will just congregate where people already are because thats how people work.

Eugen wont shut down sign up because he wants this, he knows this and he doesnt care about the instance picker, its not a threat to him. He knows the rule and he counts on people joining .social because people are already on .social.

      Decentralization is a lie, tbh.

If you wanted real decentralization then there would have been a hard limit on how many people can join an instance, like say 10-20 people max. But then eugen can have power over all those people that way. So he wont do it.

@Laurelai if you weren't shackled to an instance, to be a user on this pseudo-decentralized network, then maybe it would work more like it's supposed to

but instead, instances just accumulate members and it's not easy to move. some instances don't even allow deletion of your old account

@chara Eugen will never allow true account migrations.

@Laurelai nope, he's committed to his baby. sticking monomaniacally with the first bad idea that pops into mind, and heaping more junk atop it instead of waiting to see if problems crop up, is par for the computer-geek course
